Grapevine : August 2010
Welcome Families come in many shapes and sizes. In this family reunion AA'S MEETING IN PRINT AUGUST 2010 : $2.50 a family affair a story of the immense impac t when several generations join aa SPECIAL SECTION family reunion PLUSHalf-baked issue, AAs talk about the families, both biological and collected, that have been created in their sober lives. In "All in the Family," a member tells a compelling tale of a whole family transformed by the program. "This is the story of my family and what AA has done for us," he begins. That same thread is carried through "My Daughter, the Alcoholic," where a father discovers his own recovery through his daughter's, and "Four Brothers," a tale of siblings who come crashing into AA. Along the same lines, some members discover their sense of family through bonds formed in the program, as in "Listening to Walter," a story of a woman who finds more of a father in her elderly friend Walter, than in her own family. "My father has never talked to me as much as Walter did. ... Walter took time to listen to what was going on in my life," she writes. Other stories in the August issue underscore the importance of connection to AA, from a newcomer with just four months in "Keeping It Green" to a man who ends up sponsoring a man who once helped him in "Who's Sponsoring Who?" to a drifter who finds his way back to AA after many years in "Downward Spiral." How many times have we heard and said in meetings, "It's my fellow members who keep me sober"? That connection to AA, whether through family who join us in recovery or fellow AAs who help us along our journey, is the tie that bonds and heals.
