I thought that I'd never had blackouts. I said AA was bor- ing and that I was very thirsty---loudly! By the grace of God as I don't understand him, I have been sober over 34 years; never relapsed. How? People were pray- ing for me. Some long-timers said: "Young man, everyone needs three things to get the program. We're very sorry; you don't have any of them." I asked, "What are the three things?" ey said, "Honesty, open-mindedness and willingness." ey weren't mean. ey were telling me the truth. ey saw that I was downcast. One said, "You know, even you might get the program! If you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, if you're willing to become willing to become willing, if you'll ask God as you under- stand him or God as you don't understand him to give you what you need, but you don't have---hon- esty, open-mindedness and willingness---even you might get the program!" It's not a gimmick if it works Steps A First Step emerges from an indexed history
