W e will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.” That quote, tak- en from the prom- ises section in the Big Book, couldn’t be truer for this “road warrior,” currently enjoy- ing a 6:20 a.m. flight, clear eyed and ready for another sober day. Somehow, in just over two years, I’ve gone from white knuckling my business trips, to being cool, calm and collected, accepting each new day as the gift it is. I was fortu- nate to have a friend explain the program and line up a sponsor at my first meeting. My sponsor’s first proclamation: Don’t drink, go to meetings and work the Steps. After learning the common de- nominator in most relapse stories was, “I stopped going to meetings,” my resolve to continue attend- ing was strengthened. The mini Big Book I carry in my briefcase holds the names and addresses of over 25 intergroup phone numbers in 25 different cities. I’ve come to enjoy meetings on the road and my groups at home love hearing about my adventures. Wherever I go, groups practice Tradition Three, “The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking,” offering the experience of sharing meetings with every social class, economic range, age span, profession, gender, sexual orientation, political or religious affiliation, in both urban and rural locales. After each meeting, I truly feel connected with my new friends of Bill, and enjoy giving anyone and everyone a sincere handshake or an AA bear hug.
