The Twelfth Step says, in part, "Having had a spiritual awak- ening as the result of these steps ..." Is this true for me? If so, when? Could it be when I was first reac- quainted with my Higher Power, who I choose to call God? Perhaps it was when I was in the hospital, dy- ing and feeling his love and mercy? What about when he put a man in my life who took me through the Big Book and Steps, and taught me the Spiritual awakenings come in many forms and endless varieties program? When the craving and ob- sessive behaviors were removed and I felt my life changing? Truth is, I can't point to one event, a single, life-alter- ing instance that I'd characterize as a spiritual awakening. At the end of 2006, I was in- formed that I had end-stage liver disease (cirrhosis) and, if I didn't quit drinking, I'd be dead in six months. I was devastated.
