Grapevine : October 2011
Dear Grapevine airport and anyone else I thought would care, and it seemed that no one did. I hadn't been out of rehab very long, and I was hungry, angry, lonely and tired. e noisy bar downstairs was calling tome, asbynowitwas cocktail hour, my most di cult time of day. I telephoned the AA phone number that was listed in the phone book. e woman who answered was kind and patient, and she listened to my wet-luggage story. en she said the most amazing thing: "My phone shi here will be over in a few minutes. I know right where you are. I'll come there, and we can talk." She drove to the hotel, and we spent the next couple of hours in a "mini-meeting" that just might have saved my life. I was touched by her kindness. She also didn't let me pay for my dinner. I've thought so o en over the 30-plus years that I've been in recovery what a miracle it was that this AA volunteer was so willing to extend the hand of the Fellowship to a shaky newcomer. I hope she is still an AA member and that she knows I am most grateful to her. I've experienced many such coincidences, or miracles, since then---and I wanted to pass this one along. Kay K. Redondo Beach, Calif. Happy landing IWAS not accustomed to flying sober, and it had been a long trip. I was spending the night in a Chicago hotel. Arriving in my room, I discovered that my lug- gage and everything in it was wet from rain---my fancy cowboy boots, my leather vest, even my carton of cigarettes. I called the airline, the AA comes to the rescue after a stressful flight. Vol. 68, No. 5.
