not ready! THE HOLIDAY ISSUE t he pictures of that evening show a smile, but my eyes showed terror. everyone was drinking to the merriment of the holidays, except me. My husband had been invited to an intimate Christ- mas party. I had eleven months in AA, and my sobriety meant more to me than any party. When we arrived at the restaurant, we sat in the bar awaiting our friends. I ordered soda water and lime and had my husband taste it, just to make sure. The other couples arrived and started with their before-dinner drinks, in the bar around a small table. I scooted my chair away from the table and clenched my glass in my hand. I could get through this, I thought. It will be fun to watch them get drunk.
