would not let them see the periods of sadness, the insecurity or the fear. I generally spent the summers playing golf, partying, dating and spending a lot of time at my parents’ home in northern Michigan. Surpris‐ ingly, I never drank when I played golf—afterward sure, but never dur‐ ing. It was like separation of church and state, and it helped me maintain some balance. My favorite times were playing on my own at dusk. For me, that defined serenity, and it is when I felt closest to God and best about myself.
